Dog Exercise Calculator

Build a day your dog will love—with the right mix of walks, sniffing, play, and brain games.

Pick your dog’s breed, life stage, and current routine, and we’ll give you a practical place to begin. Adults get a daily range; puppies get short, age-friendly adventures; and seniors get a gentler rhythm built around the activities they already enjoy.

Plan a happier, busier day

Tell us a little about your dog and we’ll suggest a fun mix of walks, sniffing, play, and brain games to start with.

A little real-world context: across 1,197 Tails walks, the median outing lasted 30 minutes.

Why the calculator gives a range

Dogs are wonderfully individual. Even littermates can have different energy, confidence, favorite games, and ideas about a perfect walk. A range leaves room for all of that—and for the fact that 20 minutes of joyful sniffing can feel very different from 20 minutes of steady trotting.

These real outings give the calculator some useful company: they show what Tails dogs and their people are already doing together. 1 Tails. “Tails Dog Walking Index.”

How each answer changes the plan

Input Why it matters What the tool does
Breed What a breed was built to do hints at the games and movement they may love. Connects the breed to one of seven AKC groups. 2 American Kennel Club. “List of Breeds by Group.”
Life stage Puppies, adults, and seniors enjoy activity in different rhythms. Creates an adult range, a puppy adventure plan, or a senior feel-good plan.
Conditioning The best starting point is close to what already feels comfortable. Tunes the adult range to your dog’s current routine.

Try it for two weeks

Start easy, especially after a break. Keep the rhythm fairly consistent and notice what makes your dog bright-eyed, comfortable, and pleasantly ready for a nap. When you want to add more, change one thing—time, pace, hills, play, or brain games—and see how it lands.

Know when to call it a day

If your dog is limping, struggling to breathe, acting weak or disoriented, vomiting, or suddenly refusing to continue, head home and contact your vet.

Calculator FAQ

Is this a hard daily target?

Think of it as a friendly starting point. Your dog’s favorite activities, age, energy, weather, and next-day bounce all help you fine-tune the plan.

Does the result include mental exercise?

Yes. Treat the result as total purposeful activity and include sniffing, play, training, and food-search games rather than trying to fill every minute with continuous walking.

How fast should I increase my dog’s exercise?

Add a little at a time and give your dog a few days to show you how it feels. If they seem sore, unusually tired, or reluctant, ease up and check in with your vet.

Turn this plan into a daily habit.

Tails turns a few details about your dog—breed, age, and energy—into a personal daily goal, logs walks automatically, and keeps distance, stamina, poop notes, and family care in one clear history.
