Most of what America knows about its dogs' health comes from asking owners questions. Ask an owner how much their dog walks, whether it is overweight, or what its stool looked like this morning, and you get an estimate shaped by memory and affection. The published research knows this: when veterinarians and lay people scored the same freshly voided stools from 126 US dogs, their agreement on the industry-standard chart was kappa 0.38 and 0.34, which is poor agreement by any statistical standard (Journal of Small Animal Practice, Mar 2021).
That is the problem this page exists to fix. How much do American dogs actually move?
Ask an owner how long they walked the dog and you get a round number. Measure it with GPS and you get 36.5 minutes, at a pace closer to a stroll than a march. The picture that emerges from sensor data is not a dog that never gets out, it is a dog that gets out briefly, slowly, and usually twice.

Who moves most
What a walk is actually made of
- Tails measures 13.4% of walk time going to active exploration rather than covering ground, across 259 qualifying walks and 34 dogs (Tails, Jul 2026).
- Observation of 286 dog walks in north-west England found the median share of walk time spent sniffing was 16 percent off leash against 4 percent on leash, so sniffing is the behaviour that expands when a dog is given freedom (Applied Animal Behaviour Science, Apr 2010).
- In the same UK paper, 10 dogs each walked a 1 km route twice and the off-leash walks took a mean of 765 seconds against 698 seconds on leash, so letting a dog explore lengthened the walk by about a minute rather than consuming it (Applied Animal Behaviour Science, Apr 2010).

Why walk duration alone is a weak measure
- Of 268 dog owners surveyed in Canada, 42.5 percent walked their dog fewer than 150 minutes per week, with an average walking frequency of 5.4 times per week (Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research, Jul 2012).
- Interviews with 38 UK dog owners identified two distinct walk types, functional walks driven by guilt and obligation and recreational walks that ran longer and relieved owner stress, which is direct evidence that a duration figure conceals two different activities (Health Promotion International, May 2020).
- Across 23 US dogs walked on four types of leash equipment, only 3 of 15 coded welfare behaviours occurred often enough to analyse and one of the three was sniffing, with the authors noting sniffing can signal restlessness or positive engagement and is ambiguous without context (PeerJ, Oct 2024).
Weight and obesity
The cleanest evidence that America undercounts canine obesity comes from inside a single US hospital network. Banfield's clinicians recorded an overweight or obesity diagnosis in 34% of dogs in 2020. Body condition scoring across 4,933,916 dogs in that same US network put 44.5% of adults and 50.1% of mature adults in overweight condition before counting the obese at all. Nobody is wrong here. Hands on the dog find weight that the diagnosis field does not always capture, and the further a measurement sits from the dog itself, the thinner the American dog population appears.
How many US dogs carry excess weight
- Fifty-nine percent of dogs were classified as overweight or having obesity in the US pet obesity prevalence survey (Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 2022).

Why the diagnosis code understates the problem

What excess weight costs, and why owners miss it
- Among 131,140 US companion dogs in the Banfield network, 40.1 percent were overweight (BCS 6 to 7) and 4.1 percent obese (BCS 8 to 9), but among dogs diagnosed with osteoarthritis the figures were higher at 50.8 percent overweight and 5.3 percent obese (Frontiers in Veterinary Science, Nov 2023).
- In those same US records, higher adult body weight carried a standardised hazard ratio of 1.83 (1.81 to 1.85) for an osteoarthritis diagnosis, and in larger dogs a 50 percent weight increase cut median time to diagnosis by 16 months (Frontiers in Veterinary Science, Nov 2023).
- In UK primary care records, dogs recorded as obese had 2.71 times the odds of a diabetes mellitus diagnosis (95 percent CI 1.63 to 4.52, p less than 0.001) in a cohort of 480,469 UK dogs aged three years and over (Canine Medicine and Genetics, Jun 2020).

In a Swedish study, dog owners scored their own dogs at a mean BCS of 4.6 plus or minus 1.0 against veterinary staff scores of 5.2 plus or minus 1.1 (p less than 0.0001) before training, and misclassified body condition in 40 percent of observations; after standardised education misclassification fell to 23 percent, across a survey sample of 564 owners and a clinical sample of 64 owners with 82 dogs (Veterinary Sciences, Jul 2023).
- In a French study of 304 dogs, 27 percent of owners underestimated their pet's body condition, and disagreement with the veterinarian reached 66 percent for overweight dogs and 100 percent for obese dogs (Animals, Nov 2023).
Gut and digestive health
This is the section where the measurement problem is worst and the fix is clearest. The published gold standard for grading canine stool rests on 126 US dogs, each scored once, and on that standard veterinarians and lay people agree at kappa 0.34 to 0.38, which is poor. Every published study that actually characterises stool consistency or the gut microbiome sits somewhere between 22 and 201 dogs. Meanwhile enteropathy is the third most common grouped disorder in primary care records and roughly one dog in twelve gets acute diarrhoea each year. A condition that common, judged by a method that unreliable, is exactly what structured per-dog measurement is for. Tails publishes 707 quality-scored stool samples, longitudinal, per dog, out of 954 poop events logged.
Why eyeballing stool fails, and what 707 scored samples show
- Faecal scoring is less reliable than it looks: across naturally voided stools from 126 US dogs scored within 15 minutes of defecation by three veterinarians and 126 lay people, agreement between veterinarians ranged from kappa 0.40 to 0.77 on the Purina scale and 0.54 to 0.61 on the Waltham scale, while agreement between veterinarians and lay people fell to kappa 0.38 and 0.34 respectively (Journal of Small Animal Practice, Mar 2021).
- The Purina faecal scoring chart grades stool on a seven-point scale from 1 (very hard and dry, often expelled as individual pellets) to 7 (watery, no texture, flat puddles), and defines the ideal healthy stool as score 2, firm but not hard, pliable, segmented and easy to pick up (Purina, Nov 2021).

Diarrhoea, frequency and what changes it

- The largest incidence study of acute canine diarrhoea anywhere is UK VetCompass, where the estimated one-year incidence risk was 8.18 percent (95 percent CI 7.83 to 8.55), roughly one dog in twelve per year, drawn from a study population of 2,250,417 UK dogs under primary veterinary care (PLOS One, Jun 2025).
- Among 1,835 confirmed acute diarrhoea cases in those UK records, vomiting was recorded alongside the diarrhoea in 44.25 percent, reduced appetite in 27.68 percent, lethargy in 24.20 percent and abdominal pain in 13.41 percent (PLOS One, Jun 2025).

- In a Portuguese study of 22 police working dogs with chronic idiopathic large bowel diarrhoea, the dogs defecated a mean 3.5 times a day at baseline (range 3 to 6), falling to 2.9 times a day during a month of soluble fibre supplementation (BMC Veterinary Research, Mar 2021).

Parasites, diet and chronic gut disease
- Enteropathy was the third most prevalent grouped disorder in dogs under UK primary veterinary care at 10.43 percent (95 percent CI 10.04 to 10.84), behind only dental and skin disorders, in a random sample of 22,333 UK dogs from 784 clinics (BMC Veterinary Research, Feb 2021).
- Diarrhoea was individually recorded in 3.81 percent of dogs (95 percent CI 3.57 to 4.07) and vomiting in 3.04 percent (95 percent CI 2.82 to 3.27) in that same UK primary care population (BMC Veterinary Research, Feb 2021).
- Enteritis ranked fifth and vomiting sixth among the ten most common canine medical conditions in an analysis of more than 3.3 million pet insurance claims from over one million insured pets (Nationwide, Mar 2026).
- In the US Dog Aging Project cohort, owners reported a history of gastrointestinal conditions in 14.2 percent of dogs (3,914 of 27,541), and reported prevalence rose with age from 7 percent in puppies to 18 percent in senior dogs (PLOS One, Jan 2024).

Longevity and what predicts it
Breed and body size set the ceiling on a dog's life, but they are not the levers an owner can pull. The levers are weight, activity and sterilization, and each one is worth years, not months. The two largest US datasets disagree on the headline number by nearly three years, which tells you how much the denominator matters.

- Median survival time in US clinic records was 16.2 years for small dogs, 15.9 for medium, 14.6 for large and 13.4 years for giant dogs (Canine Medicine and Genetics, Jun 2020).
- Across more than 40,000 dogs from 118 breeds, both small body size and greater genetic diversity were independently linked to significantly longer mean lifespan, with heterozygosity explaining 14.1% of variance (GeroScience, Sep 2022).

- Obese US dogs, at a body condition score of 5, had a life expectancy of 11.71 years versus 13.18 years for dogs in ideal condition at a score of 3 (Frontiers in Veterinary Science, Feb 2023).
- Across 50,787 middle-aged neutered dogs at roughly 900 North American veterinary hospitals, the instantaneous risk of death was higher for overweight dogs in every one of 12 breeds studied, with hazard ratios ranging from 1.35 to 2.86 (Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Jan 2019).
- In the 14-year paired Labrador feeding trial, osteoarthritis was present in 42% of control-fed dogs versus 4% of diet-restricted dogs at age 2, and 83% versus 50% at age 14 (British Journal of Nutrition, Dec 2007).

What Americans spend on dogs
- The US pet dog population grew from an estimated 52.9 million in 1996 to 87.3 million in 2025 (American Veterinary Medical Association, Oct 2025).
- 53% of US households owned a dog in 2025, about 71 million households, up from 51% in 2024, within 95 million total pet-owning households (American Pet Products Association, Mar 2026).
- US pet industry expenditures reached $158 billion in 2025, up 3.7% year over year, and are projected to reach $165 billion in 2026 (American Pet Products Association, Mar 2026).

What a visit costs, and what a lifetime costs
- The average cost of a dog owner's most recent veterinary visit was $214 in the 2024 reference year, down from $265 in 2023, and average annual veterinary spending per dog owner fell 7% to $580 (American Veterinary Medical Association, Oct 2024).
- In the 2024 reference year, 74.2% of US dog owners visited a veterinarian in the past year and 86.8% identified a regular veterinarian (American Veterinary Medical Association, Oct 2024).

Every figure on this page was traced to the organisation that produced it, and every URL was fetched and confirmed on four counts: the page loads, the stat is present on that page, the publication date is on the page, and the link points to the source document rather than to coverage of it. Aggregators, listicle pages and wire reprints were rejected, and stats whose publication month could not be verified were dropped rather than dated by guesswork. Where a figure's data reference year differs from its publication date, the reference year is stated in the sentence and the parenthetical carries the publication date. Body-condition and obesity figures are deliberately presented alongside each other because they measure different things: body condition scoring, clinical diagnosis and what a veterinarian typed into the record produce very different prevalence numbers, and the gap between them is a finding rather than an error. That comparison is drawn entirely within US data, from the same hospital network, so it does not depend on reading one health system against another. Every citation on this page was checked for the country its dogs actually came from, and the country is stated in the sentence whenever the study population is not American. Several of the largest disorder-surveillance studies in veterinary medicine are UK VetCompass papers published in general journals, and those are labelled as UK throughout rather than inferred to describe US dogs; the same applies to studies from Sweden, Finland, France, Portugal, Germany and Russia.
